Stalbridge Park
The earliest classical mansion in Dorsetshire was at Stalbridge Park, in the north of the county and was commissioned in 1638 by the first Earl of Cork, paying Isaac de Caus £5 'for drawing me a plott, for contriving my new intended bwylding over the great sellar at Stalbridge'. It was built shortly afterwards and eventually pulled down in 1822. Look out for the remains, the gate-piers just off the Stalbridge-Henstridge road.

An 1813 etching of Stalbridge Park. The shortcut from Stalbridge to Milborne Port goes around the stone perimeter wall of the park and is several miles in length, having required many man-years of work originally.
