Whatcombe House
|
Whatcombe House lies in a picturesque park and was built in about 1752 of red brick with stone dressings. Edmund Morton Pleydell was the original owner. In 1802 it was altered and enlarged by the addition of two wings, the main fronts covered with stucco and the entrance moved from the south to the east side (showing in this 1860 print). It retains Georgian features internally, with a rococco ceiling and chimney-piece in the drawing room and a staircase with ironwork. Whatcombe descended by marriage through the Mansells of Smedmore to Mrs Margaretta Michel in Victorian times, Mrs Pleydell-Railston, owner before WWII, but was sold to become a school in the 1960s. It has now returned to private ownership.
